En línea recta, a unos diez minutos minutos andando por el centro del Madrid libre y alegre, se puede visitar la riqueza y la pobreza. Por el mismo precio. Se puede elegir si se visita primero la riqueza y después la pobreza, o al revés. Yo lo hice al revés. Pasé a última hora de la tarde por delante de un edificio histórico al que abrazaba por todos los lados una fila de personas con carritos y bolsas de la compra. La cola del hambre daba la vuelta a la manzana.
La realidad del hambre golpea la conciencia, aunque los que esperaban para llenar la cesta y el estómago parecían acostumbrados a pasar tranquilamente el tiempo de espera hasta alcanzar la puerta de entrada donde se repartían alimentos. El lugar de la comida tiene un nombre del Siglo XVII: «Santa, Pontificia y Real Hermandad del Refugio y la Piedad de Madrid». Miembros de la nobleza la fundaron cuando Madrid era un poblachón en el que se pasaba mucha más hambre que ahora, aunque el hambre es igual de espantosa en cualquier siglo y en cualquier lugar.
En estas cavilaciones, sin darme cuenta me tropecé con el lugar de la riqueza y la abundancia. El hotel Four Season, joya del lujo, donde una habitación cuesta 1.000 euros por noche y en la terraza dan de comer por 100 euros. Sin maridaje.
Este paseo por las nubes y el suelo coincidió con la fecha en la que el jurado del Premio Nobel de Economía regresó al lugar del crimen de 2008, dándole el galardón a Ben Bernanke, el jefe de la Reserva Federal que no vio venir la hecatombe de Wall Street, y la agravó dejando caer a Lehman Brothers. Una especie de broma macabra para las víctimas de la Gran Recesión provocada por el salvaje capitalismo financiero. Los bancos están niquelados. Pero las colas del hambre siguen dando la vuelta al mundo. Y los desahucios, a la orden del día.
Desde entonces, los pobres cada vez son más numerosos y más pobres. La desigualdad hace frontera en las calles de las ciudades y está perfectamente diagnosticada en las tablas de Excel de los organismos públicos y asociaciones privadas. Sabemos al dedillo cuántos pobres hay. Según el informe de la Red Europea contra la Pobreza, 4,8 millones de españoles sufren carencias severas. Lo que no saben las autoridades es cómo acabar con la cola del hambre, ni cómo pagarle el Ingreso Mínimo Vital a Vanessa -una mujer paciente entrevistada por Iñigo Alfonso en Radio Nacional- que come gracias a la pensión de su madre y a la ayuda del vecindario de Aluche. Tienen tarea los que llegaron al Gobierno para proteger a «los de abajo». O eso decían.
